![]() Diesel cars fitted with DPFs might not be suitable for someone doing mostly urban mileage – The problem is that prolonged town driving can choke the DPF up. Like catalytic converters on petrol cars, they sit in the exhaust pipe and trap the large soot particulates before they have a chance to escape to the atmosphere. Most car manufacturers started to fit the DPF filters in order to reduce vehicles emissions. DPF History.ĭPFs started appearing on diesel cars around 1999. It’s important to keep your DEF level topped off to avoid any issues while you’re on the road. Driving with a low DEF level will cause your vehicle to enter into “limp mode” which limits your speed and engine power. If your DEF level is low, don’t wait to refill it. There is a small-cap that needs to be removed in order to access the fill spout. The fill spout is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, just in front of the rear tire. If it is below this mark, then you will need to add DEF. The DEF (diesel engine fluid) should be at the 1/2 mark on the stick during operating temperature. Keeping on top of it will save you a lot of hassle (and money) in the long run. Just remember to check your DEF levels regularly, especially if you do a lot of driving. Pour it into the designated tank under your bonnet, and you’re good to go! It’s easy to top up your DEF levels – just visit your nearest petrol station and pick up a bottle of DEF fluid. ![]() You’ll also see a warning light on your dashboard telling you that you need to top up. ![]() If you don’t have enough DEF in your car, the engine will overheat and eventually break down. ![]() This is because it helps to cool and lubricate the engine, as well as keep it clean. Your car’s DEF (diesel engine fluid) is important to keep up. Additionally, deleting your DEF system may void your vehicle’s warranty. This means that you will not be able to register or insure your vehicle in most states. If you do choose to delete your DEF system, it is important to note that your vehicle will no longer be emissions compliant.
